Motus means “motion” or “being in motion,” but also “a gesture”. The title’s ambiguity perfectly portrays the effects of collaboration between two independent artists who share not only a love for art but also an energy, passion and interest in experimentation in a particular field of visual arts. The title of the exhibition intentionally reflects the process of creation, as the works are constantly and literally in motion – parts of them are created in Warsaw and later sent to the city of Yoshida in Japan, where they undergo a process of further transformation. Once finished, or rather completed, the works travel to Warsaw in order to be later moved back again to Japan, where they will also be exhibited.

The Motus exhibition is an exciting meeting of two artistic personalities – the Japanese artist Masafumi Koshio and Olgierd Zbychorski from Poland. It mainly presents minimalistic and abstract graphic design forms created using the original “motusgraphy” technique, i.e., the process of scanning graphic elements that are in motion, of recording a gesture. The intended, sometimes random, effects are transferred to paper through screen printing. Finally, the works are complemented and interpreted by the calligraphy master from faraway Nippon. This unusual, cross-cultural and intercontinental artistic dialogue demonstrates a deep passion for creating – an interplay between abstract forms and particular visions, a desire for gestures and signs to meet. One artist introduces basic calligraphy elements – lines and points, which are digitally transformed via a painting gesture. In turn, through interpretative interaction but also respect for the already created elements, the calligraphy master adds a meditative dimension to the works.

The Japanese-Polish duo’s artistic collaboration has been ongoing since 2019. So far two exhibitions have been presented at the Lukka Art Gallery in Warsaw: Ink (2019) and Co tu dają (2021), the latter also presented in Shizuoka, Japan in July of that year. The Japanese instalment of the Motus exhibition is set to take place in May 2022 in the city of Shizuoka.
